Stephen Aiguier

President and Founder

"Howdy!" - Drawing from a wealth of knowledge in the trades and a passion for green construction, Stephen founded Green Hammer Inc, in the winter of 2002: "My wish is to create a construction company that will inspire current and future generations of ecologically minded builders to follow in its path and (I hope) take it even further."

Alex Boetzel

Michael Christopher

Michael is the supervisor extraordinaire for our Green Paint division. His mission is to produce the best product as safely as possible for the planet, his clients, his co-workers and himself. Michael has a 4-year painting apprenticeship from Clackamas Community College. Straight out of school, he spent 6 years on a commercial fishing vessel floating from California to Alaska and all the way to the Pribilof Islands near Russia! Michael is a long time downhill skateboarder and streetl uge and is ranked #312 in the WORLD! He also enjoys surfing, snowboarding, and skateboarding. But Michael's greatest accomplishment is raising his daughter into a beautiful woman and productive member of society. He is a proud grandfather.

Bryan Foetish

Carpenter

'Cracked Pot' artist, metal smith, and multitask extraordinaire, Bryan is the priceless work machine and gentle giant behind Green Hammer. His primary purpose is to keep the crew smiling by lending a helping hand when needed, getting the materials to the jobsite on time, keeping the tools in top condition, making sure we never run out of nails.......the list goes on and on, but somehow Bryan always manages to stay cool calm and smiling and promptly asks: "What Next?!"

Leland Gilmore

Cabinet Maker

Born and raised in Oakland, California, Leland came to Green Hammer from a family of carpenters. He grew up working for his pop doing seismic retrofitting and framing. Now Leland is learning finish carpentry skills and is a huge help in the cabinet shop. He graduated from Portland State University with a Bachelor of Science in English Literature and a Minor in Sustainable Urban Development. He hopes to attain a master’s degree in Urban Studies with a focus on Sustainability. Leland has spent a lot of time traveling in South America and hopes to someday contribute to sustainable education and practices in rural areas and maybe even represent Green Hammer in building schools.

Leland likes to spend his free time hucking himself off bike ramps, mountaineering, rock climbing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and being outside. He’s a little shy at first, but once you get to know him he’s a big sweetheart!

Jessica Martin

Office Manager and Human Resources

Jessica is the secret weapon behind the operations here at Green Hammer. She came to us in December 2006 from SmartWood where she managed the Forest Stewardship Council Chain of Custody program for the United States and was an FSC auditor. She hails from Chicago {“what up Chi-Town!”}, holds a Bachelors degree in Public Relations from Southern Illinois University and a certificate in Human Resources from Portland State University. In the time that she’s been at Green Hammer she has already taken the lead on obtaining full health care for full time employees, made sure that our insurance is dialed in (which, as you can imagine, for three separate companies is quite complex) and created a safety committee. On a daily basis she keeps track of each and every one of our projects, from the purchase of nails to full lumber packages to all the hours that our crew works, she also makes sure that our bills get paid on time. We can’t tell you how much we appreciate all that she does.

Jessica is not only a Human Resources and Office Management Extraordinaire, she is also a member of the tribal belly dance troupe Mandala! She has a weakness for good literature, food, wine and travel. Her passions (besides working at Green Hammer of course) are dance and music. She also has the rare talent of being able to balance a sword on her head! She would like to thank her cats, Baldwin and Fitzgerald, for their unending support and friendship. She is thrilled to be a part of the Green Hammer family and plans to be around for a good long while. Well, Jessica, we’re thrilled that you will be, too!

Ben McCune

Awesome Dude
Ben is Green Hammer's Recycling Program Director, Wood Wizard, Sawzall Surgeon and Demo Doctor. He is originally from Iowa, has lived in Germany and holds a BA in Art and German from Earlham College. He has traveled in South America, Africa, Europe and Asia. He is passionate about travel, learning new languages, snowboarding, biking, kite boarding, restoring his vintage bungalow and being the change he wishes to see in the world. Green Hammer is grateful to have Ben's broad experience and happy, smiling face on our job sites!

Matthew McCune

Architectural Designer

"Drawings, drawings, drawings!" ...is Matthew's motto. With 25 years of drawing experience and degrees in Physics and Architecture he is a wealth of information about design, green building, travel, community art, cooking and bad jokes. Anything that you may have a question about, he most likely has an answer. Matthew's old school style calls for drawing by hand (which not many designers can claim) creating plans that are also works of art. He is calm and cool throughout the design and build process, and before you know it, you'll be inviting him over for a beer on a regular basis! Thanks for all of your hard work and great sense of humor, Matthew!

Joolz Moorcroft

Master Carpenter & Urban Timberworks Manager

When Joolz isn't walking on stilts, spinning and spitting fire he's making sure end grain meets end grain and knot's are strategically placed. Beyond being an excellent craftsman, few carpenters share Joolz's enthusiasm for ecological building, or his ability to breathe life back into salvaged materials. I knew Joolz was a perfect fit for Green Hammer when during his first week he was confronted with a pile of nail ridden splintered lumber and asked if he thought we could do anything with it, a light sparked in his eye, he grinned ear to ear, slapped his hands together and bellowed: "Alright! Oh yeah, yeah, we can do a lot with this!"

Andrew Morphis

Lead Framer

Andrew came to us from Tennessee with a mastery of framing. He is one of our lead carpenters, bringing to the table a diverse set of skills from new construction and remodeling to professional theatrical sets. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies from University of the South-Sewanee. Andrew spent 4 years in Alaska working for Fish and Wildlife, Perseverance Theater, multiple construction companies, enjoying the scenery and all that Alaska has to offer. In his free time, Andrew enjoys snowboarding, biking and music. Andrew’s positive attitude, great sense of humor and dedication make him a great benefit to Green Hammer. He is about to the tie the knot with long time girlfriend and will head to Venice and the Italian countryside for his honeymoon. Congratulations Andrew!!

Rebecca Novis

Green Incentives, LEED and Project Coordinator

Rebecca is pure energy. We think we might actually be able to power all of our new houses with it. It is only fitting that she is now the LEED/green incentive, energy systems and project coordinator. Rebecca came to us in 2005 fresh out of Lewis and Clark College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology – Anthropology. She spent 6 months in Tanzania studying the building techniques of the Warusha and Maasai tribes, which led her to write her thesis on sustainable building techniques in low-income housing. She came to Green Hammer with a passion for learning about all things green building and she hasn’t stopped since. She has helped the Build Local Alliance come into being and managed the office for Green Hammer, Green Paint and Urban Timberworks. Currently she is a project coordinator, manages the Go Green Incentives program, and works to qualify our homes for LEED, Earth Advantage and Energy Star.

In addition to all the work she does at Green Hammer, Rebecca is also on the steering committee of the Build Local Alliance and the executive committee of the Emerging Green Builders.

She also somehow finds the time to have fun surfing, skiing, and skateboarding. We hope she stays at Green Hammer long enough that we might be able to absorb some of that energy ourselves!

Annie Portlock

Materials and Project Coordinator

Annie was raised by passionately environmentalist innkeepers in beautiful Hope Valley California (in the Sierra Nevada mountains). She studied dance and photography as a teenager and, after traveling in Eastern Europe, moved to Portland in the fall of 1999 to attend Portland State University. She decided to pursue installation, video and performance art during college and briefly attended the San Francisco Art Institute. She (finally!) received her Bachelor of Science in Fine Art Sculpture and in 2005 decided that it would be fun to work for her friend Stephen’s rapidly growing green building company. She started as the office manager and about a year later decided that her talents would be better utilized in a different position. Since then she has done almost everything at Green Hammer except swing the actual hammer. Her responsibilities have included project coordination, excel mastery, material consultation, photography, drafting, client services, graphic design, and marketing, just to name a few. Her goofy sense of humor and optimistic outlook keep everyone around her in a good mood. Her interests include modern design, art, architecture, photography, dance, weird British comedy, and she is a closet musical theater nerd. She dreams of the day that Green Hammer: The Musical! debuts on Broadway. You can send emails regarding scriptwriting and choreography to annie@greenhammerconstruction.

Nick Sommerhiser

Green Paint

Nick is a painter extraordinaire! He is gaining painting and business experience to eventually run his own Green Paint crew. He has a passion for sustainability and would like to attain his LEED Accredited Professional certification. Nick is a Portland native. He graduated from Portland State University with a degree in geography with an emphasis on alpine environments, sustainability and Northwest ecosystems. Growing up under the roof of a carpenter, Nick has always worked side jobs in construction and painting. He also worked at local snowboard shops during high school and college.

He’s been heli-boarding and traveled around Europe, but finds recreating in his backyard Cascades the most fulfilling recreation.

Michael Spatzek

Carpenter and Lead Framer
With a penchant for bringing out smiles on and away from the jobsite, Michael can always be counted on to add a splash of humor. Growing up on the North Coast (Chicago), with a subsequent background of building and playing in the Northern Rockies, he has discovered a very satisfying mixture of culture, family, and nature in Portland and at Green Hammer.

Robert Wortman

Lead Finish Carpenter and Cabinet Craftsman

In the dictionary under the title 'Finish Carpenter' you should see a photo of Robert Wortman. When Robert first came on to the crew there was a human resource misshap. Initially working as a framer and doing great work, Robert mentioned his enthusiasm for finish by saying 'you've yet to see the true wraith of my hammer' - Well Robert you were right.

Zoe

Green Hammer Mascot

Zoe is our security system, quality control manager, company morale leader, part time excavator, and all around spirit team. She might look tough, but she's a creampuff inside!
